Greg McElroy has some insight into Billy Napier from some of his previous stops, and the former Alabama quarterback and ESPN commentator has offered positive reviews of the new Florida coach.

McElroy made an appearance on “Another Dooley Noted Podcast” with Pat Dooley, and shared that he observed Napier at Arizona State when the coach was on staff there because McElroy’s father was an associate vice president and chief business development officer there in 2017.

“His time at Louisiana, I know some people on his staff and have been around guys that have been around that program extensively,” McElroy said, via Swamp247. “They speak glowingly about the type of operation he’s running. No nonsense, business-oriented approach that leads to a lot of really quality results.”

McElroy then addressed the issue at the heart of the change from Dan Mullen to Napier, and something that will resonate with Florida fans.

“I couldn’t be happier for him, and I honestly believe this is the right guy to go toe-to-toe with Georgia on the 353 days that you’re not playing games,” McElroy said. “On gameday Dan Mullen was danged good. You can say what you want about him, but on gameday he knew how to get it done. He can draw a play, he can call a play, he can design a play and create problems for defenses, but you need a head coach 365 days a year.”

McElroy added that Napier’s background has what it takes to excel in Gainesville.

“I think Billy, on his daily preparation and daily willingness to grind, might be better positioned to position the Gators in a better spot on those days the games aren’t going to be happening in the Swamp or elsewhere in the SEC,” he said.
