Jay Bateman is already enjoying his time on the Florida Gators staff as the inside linebackers coach, and he’s been told that he has one of the best rooms on the team, and he’s pleased so far.

Bateman is impressed with Scooby Williams and Derek Wingo, while Diwun Black is improving, and seen as a really long and a good pass rusher. The coaching staff sees a role for Black, and Bateman told Black that the more comfortable he gets in the system, the more Black will play.

As for the defense overall, Bateman said the Gators will be very multiple on defense, and co-defensive coordinator Patrick Toney is really bright and has a good plan.

Bateman is also impressed with how coach Billy Napier runs a program.

“Every day we come to work you’re working for a really, really smart, detailed guy,” Bateman said. “I don’t think there’s anybody else like him. To do what he does is amazing.”

Spring game format

The spring game is set for April 14. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and gates open at 6 p.m.

The team will split into two teams and will practice separately during the last week of spring camp. On game day, the teams will run out of separate tunnels using both the home and visiting locker rooms.

The game will feature four quarters, a 15-minute halftime and a running clock with the exception of the last four minutes of each half. The clock will also stop for penalties, change of possession and scores.

Competition between the two teams will serve as a way for fans to experience a Gators game day at the Swamp.
