La’Mical Perine just scored his first touchdown in the National Football League.
The rookie from Florida, a 4th-round pick for the New York Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft, took a handoff from quarterback Sam Darnold, found the edge and stretched to break the plane to give the 0-6 Jets a surprising 10-0 lead over the 4-2 Buffalo Bills with less than 7½ minutes to go in the 2nd quarter.
The Theodore, Alabama native recorded 22 rushing touchdowns in 4 seasons with the Florida Gators, including a career-best 826 yards and 7 touchdowns as a junior in 2019. Perine has a strong role model to look up to in the running backs room: veteran and future Hall of Famer Frank Gore is a key member of New York’s rushing attack.
If the Jets pull off the upset against the highly-favored Bills at MetLife Stadium, they might have Perine to thank after a 2nd-half touchdown. Either way, let’s hope it’s the first of many for the young man.
