Paul Finebaum talks Billy Napier, stakes for Florida in Week 3
It’s been a rough start to the season for the Florida Gators as head coach Billy Napier continues to be on the hot seat.
College football analyst Paul Finebaum recently offered his thoughts on where Napier currently stands, as well as what the stakes are for Florida heading into Week 3’s matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies.
“I think must-win is really an understatement,” Finebaum said. “Should Billy Napier fail to win this game and Florida loses, again, I don’t see how he can survive. I know that sounds like we’re going for the headline — we’re not. I was down there a couple of weeks ago and my pulse of that situation is all of the goodwill Billy Napier found in the offseason, and he found a lot, went out the window.”
The first week of the season, the Gators disappointed with a 41-17 loss to Miami in which the Gators looked anything but competitive. Week 2 held better fortune as Florida defeated Samford, 45-7. But already, the team finds itself in limbo at quarterback with Graham Mertz still holding onto the starting position, though backup DJ Lagway is threatening and will get more playing time on the field.
It will be interesting to watch how Florida adjusts, but it seems Napier has worn out any welcome that was still left and that the end is near for him if he cannot capitalize upon the opportunity against Texas A&M.

Way to go leeland! You’ve still got it.
We’ll let you know what “it” is after the lab test results come back. ;)
Now now leeland what have you done, call me names to make me feel bad and slow my roll so you can claim to be Firs

Well played
I think Billy hangs around until the end of the season, maybe even into next season. Who would Florida get to replace him mid-season?
That is indeed the perplexity of the moment (I suspect that it would go to the OC, but none of us know exactly what is going on behind the scenes). The only early, actually free agent, might be Urban Myer, and that is an entirely wild thought – not simply a wild card – if you put any stock in the rumor mill at all. I don’t, myself.
Otherwise, Finebaum appears to have had yet another “duh” moment.
Paul is really really good at those “duh” moments.
I personally don’t want Meyer, in my opinion, he’s the one who started the downfall of Gator football.
Odd that I was thinking the very same thing last night over the remnants of a 6×60 La Gloria Cubano left over from last Saturday. In the solitude of my Gator Man Cave (aka, the garage) and in the absence of the lovely Gator-3 (who only tolerates cigars during football season, her most repeated enjoinder then being “Ick-Ick-Ick you’re a Piggy Wig”), that heavenly yet slightly stale tobacco must have inspired my equally stale left-over brain to ponder where this slide truly began. By the time said brain had totally expended its last remaining neuron, there being only three or four to begin with, I had to rely on imagery to think and I was startled to realize that an image of a grinning UM was the only one that would come up. Now if that ain’t scientific proof on your hypothesis, I’ll be a suck-egg mule!
lol!! You are great at making an account come to life Doc :)
I tell ya someone should give this Finebaum genius a TV show
any high school coach that is available – he is not much more
Come on, Gators! Overwhelm them with variables!
LOL – I’m already confused beyond repair by all his variables! :)
Welcome – silly billy is not wanted at Florida. LANE COME HOME!
Hope you don’t mean that.
Believe me Neal. He’s got LOTS of company within Gator Nation right now.
Best thing that could happen for those of us who are NOT on the Lane Train is for Napier to play Lagway a lot more. That would allow the Gators to win 6-7 games this season and take some heat off.
Coupled with the current disarray in the UF administration, that will allow Napier to survive into next season and hopefully get Kiffin hired by some other major program, or an NFL team after this season. His inflection point for leaving Ole Miss will come at the end of this season, or not at all.
Clearly, Paul doesn’t understand Billy has a five year plan. It’s actually kept in a Trapper Keeper locked in a safe his office which is also protected by pressure plates and a web of lasers. It’s very similar to the business plan of the Underwear Gnomes. Lose games— >> ? —>> win games.
According to unnamed sources, it’s there on page 357 of Napier’s super secret five year plan:
1. Play the immobile super senior
2. Bench the nimble freshman
3. Let a weak OL allow the pass rush to limit the immobile super senior to 90 passing yds.
4. Lose the game by three scores
5. Celebrate another valuable life lesson learned by the team.
That nails it, Emilio! Russia-Russia-Russia: CBN is a Russian Agent!!! Good work, my friend. :)
lol! You made my day!
Not a South Park viewer but this is post of the day, hilarious. Not sure who awards those anymore but good to have you back in rare form truth!
Paul is a munchkin.
I don’t see how the Gators can lose this game – aTm is offensively challenged and can only run the ball – so the Florida DCs can easily scheme the defense – the Gator run D is pretty good. aTM dbs are questionable and aTm hasn’t faced a dual threat qb like Lagway
I don’t either AL, but then again I need new glasses.
