Quick thoughts from Florida’s 28-20 win against East Carolina in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl:

What it means: After a tumultuous year, the Gators ended their season on a high note with a victory against one of the nation’s best passing offenses. Florida enters the Jim McElwain with momentum and can focus on recruiting with one month remaining until National Signing Day. The departing players, such as Dante Fowler Jr., end their collegiate careers on a high note in a hard fought victory.

What I liked: Florida saw a strong performance from its running game, but not from who you’d expect. Adam Lane, who entered the game with 72 yards on eight carries, led the Gators with 109 yards and a touchdown on 16 attempts. The freshman averaged 6.8 yards per carry, including a 48-yard run in the first quarter to set up a 2-yard score.

What I didn’t like: Matt Jones’ absence from Saturday’s game. There was no indication as to why Florida’s leading rusher was inactive for the Birmingham Bowl, but it was enough to prevent the NFL draft prospect from participating in his final collegiate game. Still, the Gators managed to outgain the Pirates by a 169-109 margin.

Who’s the man: Dante Fowler Jr. While the junior is set to embark on a professional career this spring, his collegiate career ended on a high note with a stellar performance. Fowler recorded three sacks, including one to halt a late fourth quarter drive.

Key plays: The Gators led 28-20 with 3:28 remaining. East Carolina took over on its own 42-yard line and drove down to the Florida goal line. But Vernon Hargreaves halted the potential comeback with an interception in the end zone. The Gators regained possession and ran out the clock, securing the victory.

What’s next: Florida will kickoff the McElwain era against New Mexico State on Sept. 5 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
