Domestic violence allegations are not taken lightly in the NFL, and Florida DT Caleb Brantley’s couldn’t have come at a worse time. Now, the former Gator will have to wait until after the draft process to know if he will be charged.

Brantley made headlines earlier this month for a reported physical altercation with a female that allegedly knocked her unconscious and knocked her out her tooth. According to an ESPN report, the Gainesville Police Department initially charged Brantley, but he will have to wait until after the draft to know his fate as an attorney for the state of Florida reviews the case.

“I don’t care about the NFL draft, and I don’t believe there’s any way we will make a decision before Thursday,” State Attorney Bill Cervone said. “The police filed their report with us Friday and we’re trying to figure out what’s what.”

Brantley, who recorded 80 tackles, 20.5 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks during his career, was projected as a second-round pick before the incident.

That projection could be way too high now, however, as recent history shows that NFL front offices may take him off their boards completely. A similar situation saw LSU prospect La’el Collins plummet from a first-round grade to an undrafted reality as a pending investigation put his NFL future in jeopardy.

In fairness to Brantley, his charge of misdemeanor simple battery is much less serious than the murder investigation that followed Collins, but former Colts GM and current ESPN analyst Bill Polian said of Brantley, “If he’s this stupid…I hope he falls to the seventh round or he’s signed as a collegiate free agent.”

Only time will tell the fate of the former Gator.
