Report: Jim McElwain ended Florida-LSU stalemate
Florida and LSU were stuck on when and where to play the game until Gators coach Jim McElwain signed off on a compromise, according to an article by Fox Sports’ columnist Clay Travis.
As was widely reported and suggested, LSU sought to either the play on Nov. 19 in Baton Rouge or move one of the Florida-Georgia or SEC Championship games to play on Oct. 29 or Dec. 3. Moving either of the games proposed by LSU was not an option, and UF remained adamant about playing in Gainesville on Nov. 19.
McElwain finally agreed to a compromise that would give the Gators back-to-back home games against the Tigers in 2017 and 2018:
Finally, on Thursday, five days after the game would have initially been played, came a major breakthrough: Florida head coach Jim McElwain was the SEC’s savior, agreeing to travel to Baton Rouge to play at LSU this season in exchange for the Gators getting the home game back in 2017.
For more of Travis’ detailed account of both sides’ negotiation tactics and frustrations with the situation, check out the full article here.
Good on ya coach Mac
Stacking the court, playing with PEDS and dodging games.
The UF way.
Covering up sexual assaults, paying off victims, keeping a charged domestic violence perpetrator on campus, and crying on every message board.
The Vol way.
Bottom-feeding, competing for bowl eligibility, thinking the Spurrier years actually makes you a relevant program, and generally embarrassing the SEC.
The Cock Way.
Living off of 20 years ago, spouting off ignorance on message boards, getting shut down by facts, overall being an out of touch delusional fanboy.
The Keno way.
Speaking of relevance when was TN’s last 10+ win season, when was the last time they won the east?
2007, maybe? Speaking of which.. Prior to 2011, when was SC’s last 10+ win season? It’s okay, we’ll wait…
Touting a historically insignificant team, a total disgrace and embarrassment to the entire conference.
The BLPB way.
GTFOH with the relevance bs. No one cares about your doormat program. We’ll be happy to pad our record on your own home field at the end of the month.
@notkirk so ten years ago, yet your brethren preaches their relevance non stop, I guess all you vols fans quit watching football ten years ago. Your sorry a$$ school has done nothing but bring down the graduation rate and raise the arrest rate in the sec this decade.
Butch made the best coach in your schools history quit. Let that sink in.
You guys are terrible and think mushchamp will save you. Again, let that sink in.
Carolina is awful and not relevant. Meanwhile the Vols have had 3 gameday games this season with a top ten ranking. Have fun cheering for that garbage team you like so much.
SC caused your best coach to be fired, let that sink in, TN hasn’t had a 10 win season in a decade let that set in, TN hasn’t won the East in a decade, let that set in.
Your school spends more money paying sexual assault victims then your state spends on dental checkups a year.
Your state is poor and meth addled and your fan base proves it.
Another writer with a problem with the truth. Why no mention of LSU’s offer to play this past Sunday in Gainesville? Try and maintain some credibility guys. You look foolish by not telling the whole truth, just using your personal opinion to make LSU look bad. The game could have easily been in Florida this season. Foley, the coward, passed. This is what he gets. Good on Coach Mac for agreeing to this solution.
Omg shut up already. A hurricane pummeled Florida and it’s easy to say that in hindsight. You guys got exactly what you wanted so seems like there’s nothing left for LSU fans to complain about.
You really need to shut up. You keep confirming how much of an idiot you are every time you post.
I guess you were involved in the discussions with emergency personnel who could not commit to working a game when they were planning to help people deal with the aftermath of a cat 4/3.
Until you can support your assertions with actual facts. Shut the F%^K up.
Agree with this. Two ego ADs. UF for not being flexible on the front and lsu not being flexible on the back. Was sure a compromise for UF to move game. But even though UF is sitting there with 1 sec loss, he’s gotta know that next years team will more than likely be better than probable end result this year, so, could, at the end of the day work better for UF by having another home game next year.
njvol, the loss of this game at home not only has an economic impact for Florida, it also has an impact on recruiting this season as there were going to be a number of recruits at the UF/UF game this year.
We will have an incredible opportunity for recruiting next year, and that is the only real consolation prize for UF.
Glad the game will get played, but Aleva comes out bad in the end when you look at the fact he was trying to dictate terms as Florida was preparing for an impending hurricane and then was not flexible at all in the aftermath. Foley’s statement was awesome and he certainly had a derisive tone toward Aleva as not being a true family member in the negotiation process. I wonder how long Aleva remains at LSU as his days are certainly numbered if he cannot get a coach that will win games next year.
Alleva is an ass. Very few LSU fans like him. I blame Foley for this mess, but no one is saying that Alleva negotiated in good faith after the storm. He was pissed as hell at Foley and he wasn’t going to do anything to assist. I’m not at all saying that is the right thing to do, but I understand him being pissed.
The stalemate is in reference to post-Thursday negotiations, after the SEC announced the game was postponed. I didn’t see the pre-Thursday offers as relevant to the McElwain item of Travis’ report.
You’re 100% idiot. It could have been played Gainesville, but it wasn’t.
Mac’s decision to play in baton rogue this year, with back to back home games in 2017/2018 is brilliant.
LSU definitely got the short end of the stick.
Anyways, don’t get to burned out by this hurricane business. It’s going to be a long season for lsu and you will have plenty of things to whine about.
Thank you, Jim McElwain. I never placed any blame for this. I understand that a hurricane can be a major hassle. I understand Alleva not wanting to give up a home game, considering the economic impact on an already weakened Baton Rouge area. I don’t think the Gators are afraid of LSU. I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion. I think the finger pointing I’ve seen on this site is absurd. I’m glad they will play the game. It’s always a good one between these teams.
This. this. this. people go freaking bananas over football and aren’t even the ones making decisions. Glad the game is getting played, I think it will be a great game. I know last years was crazy lol.
absolutely agree… it is been overplayed and too much finger pointing. Let’s get back to playing some football. I am sad I dont get to see the LSU game in person this season, but will be looking forward to having them in the Swamp the next two seasons…
I’m going to try and break it down for all the gator fans that are so upset with me, instead of their pathetic AD. During all the discussions leading up to the hurricane, Foley refused to consider any alternative. We knew this storm was coming for several days. Until Wednesday, he insisted there was no problem and the game would be played in Gainesville Saturday at noon. On Thursday, the game was cancelled after much discussion. I understand Foley turning down going to LSU or playing at a neutral sight. LSU’s last proposal was this; schedule the game for Sunday afternoon. The storm was due to pass Friday afternoon/evening. If the storm would have hit that part of the area hard, the call could be made Saturday morning on whether to play Sunday or not. Foley refused. Foley refused a tentative proposal that would have kept the gsme in Gainesville Sunday. Turns out, on Saturday morning Florida had beautiful weather and no issues in the Gainesville area. Emergency personnel were not overwhelmed and would have been available for Sunday’s game. There is no reason foley turned down a tentative plan. When he did, the gloves were off. I am no fan of Alleva, but I understand him being pissed. Florida fans keep talking about what ifs that didn’t happen. The tentative plan covered the concerns. Blame Foley.
sure, it was Foley’s fault a massive category 4 storm was projected to wipe out the eastern seaboard of florida. and you’re right… what he SHOULD have done was gone to state and local emergency teams as they were preparing for the worst on Thursday and said to them; “He guys, I know you’re working hard over here and that there are 2.5 million people being evacuated and most of them are coming inland to places like gainesville, but here’s the deal.. I’m going to play a football game on saturday or sunday so i need you to plan for multiple times.. it could be 4 on saturday, 9 on saturday or anytime on sunday. I need you to carve out about 30% of your first responders to be ready come game time. Sound good? Alright, great!! Now get back to planning for that storm!!”
That’s HONESTLY how you feel? You believe that Foley should have created a “tentative” plan around a football game while half the state was preparing for their homes to be wiped away. You BELIEVE he should have been more accommodating to LSU instead of more conscience about the state of florida and the needs of emergency services? I would expect people from Iowa wouldn’t understand how a large storm could affect an entire state.. not someone from Louisiana. glad we sent all our prayers, first responders and donations to LA after katrina for a bunch of selfish p**** who cared more for playing a football game than the welfare of the people in the state of florida.
and glad you whined your way to getting what you want..
Gainesvlle received about 200 people from the coast. The expected storm was considered dangerous enough to cancel the game but not dangerous enough to cancel recruit visits? So much for concern for their safety…
There were plenty of support officials to play that game… BUT even if all this bs you people keep spewing about the ‘less than expected storm’. It would have been easy for Foley to annouince the game wil be tentavly scheduled for Sunday in Gainesville, if the area suffers damage or if support isn’t available, the game may have to be cancelled… Update Saturday… Everyone would have been ok with that… But without rehashing the real reason he cancelled the game, let’s just borrow a famous Saban quote “it was what it was”…
the recruit rumor was proven false
Once again LSUMC, you have again managed to look like an idiot. Congratulations on that.
Do everyone a favor and shutup.
Congratulations, your AD held his breath until the adults made the decision to go ahead and play the game in BR.
Be proud of him in the coming years.
I have to be honest. You two are simply stupid. Read it again without your gator pj’s on. Foley didn’t have to talk to any emergency personnel Thursday. He had until Saturday morning. How dense are you two? This is basic stuff that is going right over your heads.
WTF are you talking about????? So you think football game prep for over 90,000 people going to attend takes a few hours to plan?????? Do you understand what logistics is? Do you understand that when Florida has a game the city doubles and that EXTRA first responders are needed to help?? Do you understand that basic concept? Please tell me you understand just that? Was he going to ask these first responders to stand by and wait or were they supposed to do their REAL job which is being ready for the worst? By the way, just because gainesville wasn’t hit which it never really was in danger, doesn’t mean that the first responders have a free afternoon. Jacksonville, st augustine, cocoa beach, these places got hit. They are all within 100 miles of gainesville. were these police and fire and medical people suppose to stay in gainesville for a football game for LSU???? Is that what you wanted???
You’re quite the drama queen Stevie. Everyone managed to do it, except for your guy, who had motive not to, or so he thought. I don’t support Alleva in this, but only a drama queen or a sheeple would support Foley in this.
I wonder why all those first responders in Miami weren’t called up to the coast where the Gainesville first responders are said to be?
The game prep should have already been done… just put in motion two days later…
PoFoke – Get a map… Miami is a lot further away from the heavily impacted areas than Gainesville…
Next time, maybe your AD and your second tier media will STFU and let Florida decide what is best for Florida and the people who live here. Instead you idiots made it a media circus with your clown AD. The same AD who bungled the Duke lacrosse fiasco years ago and ruined a bunch of kids lives(That’s who you hire BTW? didn’t know until li looked up). I use to have respect for LSU, they were the one team in the conference I ALWAYS rooted for every week minus playing FLA.. You all showed your true colors now.. Firing Miles mid season, AD screaming about how Florida should handle what could have been a major catastrophe for the state and now the fans running their ignorant mouths like lemmings just repeating what their media is saying. “florida is scared. we offered options. they wanted to heal players. their AD is to blame.” blah blah blah. You all are sad…
Foley is a coward. He should have had some sort of contingency plan like every other decent AD that was potentially impacted by the storm. Maybe he is just incompetent. It’s one or the other. This is sure to make the Florida LSU annual matchup a much more intense rivalry. I’m good with that and my stand. You can be good with yours. When the game comes, I expect LSU to win for the fourth consecutive time.
good.. and I’ll be there smiling when you’re wrong… maybe he is “incompetent.” that or he has won the SEC all sports trophy for like 23 years straight and was AD while Florida has collected some ridiculous amount of national titles including 3 in football and 2 in basketball and 25 in other sports….. smells like incompetence to me… I’m pretty sure their is a consensus among knowledgable people that Foley was probably one of the greatest AD’s of all time… don’t trust me, look it up..
I agree with lsumc a contingency plan with the option to cancel could have been set in place
Florida doesn’t play football on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays or Sundays. We play on Saturday. It doesn’t matter how much pathetic fans such as yourself cry and wine, that fact won’t change.
How many of you actually read the article and how many just read the totally slanted title and excerpt above?
Read the whole article before you comment. It was much more about LSU’s forward thinking and planning (they had plenty of experience) and the EARLY concern for the status of the game.
The lack of planning well before the storm and timely decision-making the week before the game was atrocious and lead to a lot of grief on both sides and now a bunch of name-calling by fans and so-called fans.
I have no dog in this hunt, but having lived in hurricane territory most of my life, including a decade in NOLA, I learned very early to have contingency plans well in advance of a possible hurricane, regardless of where it was predicted. I prefabricated plywood window covers that could be hung and latched from the inside (2-story house) and had a go bag packed during hurricane season.
You would think schools that have multi-million dollar staffs could plan something in advance to play games that are worth multi-millions if at all possible. Sheesh.
word
Foley gets a pass on this one. First, because he is a first-ballot Hall of Fame AD (if there is such a place)—something Aleve will never be. Second, there was a storm unlike anything NE Fla. has seen in generations bearing down on the area. I am more than willing to give Foley the benefit of the doubt about wanting to do the safest thing much more than I could possible entertain the thought that Florida doesn’t want to play LSU. It’s not like this is the ’07 Tigers. This is a team that just fired its coach.
UF fans you can ignore reality all you want but your dumbass AD caused this entire problem. The LSU/UF game was indeed playable last weekend or even on Sunday or Monday as LSU AD offered. GOD FORBID that LSU has the audacity after being refused every compromise by Foley to want to not cancel our last home game of the season which is Senior Night. In addition LSU is so unreasonable to not want to play 3 SEC games on the road in 13 days. All because UF refused to play and your AD waited until Thursday to make a decision which should have been made by Tuesday. It is UF’s and Foley’s fault and you can lie all you want but your AD caused all this by being a self absorbed prick.
Now your AD is trying to rewrite what occurred to suit his needs. What a scum.
It’s brilliant. Good call, Mac!
