San Francisco confirmed in a statement late Saturday night that rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall has sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is in stable but “serious” condition.

“We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time,” the Niners said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.”

Pearsall was the victim of an attempted robbery in a San Francisco neighborhood on Saturday. Several reports have suggested Pearsall was being targeted for his watch.

SFPD Chief William Scott said in a statement on Twitter that he was “extremely shocked and saddened about the shooting.” A statement from the SFPD said a suspect was in custody and charges are currently pending.

Pearsall was a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year. He spent 3 seasons at Arizona State prior to transferring to Florida. He appeared in 25 games for the Gators across 2 seasons.

As a fifth-year senior in 2023, he led the team in receptions and yards.

Pearsall had been nursing a shoulder injury in training camp that forced him to miss the 49ers’ entire preseason slate, putting his role with the offense to open the season in flux. Head coach Kyle Shanahan had described the issue as a shoulder subluxation, which initially happened when Pearsall was a junior in college.
