Former Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery in a San Francisco neighborhood on Saturday, according to multiple reports and now the police chief has issued a public statement on the incident.

Initially, the San Francisco Police released an official statement from their social media accounts. Below is an excerpt of the bulk of the statement:

During the preliminary investigation, officers learned one of the subjects attempted to rob the victim, San Francisco 49ers player Ricky Pearsall. During the attempted robbery, a physical altercation ensued, and both the suspect and victim were injured. The suspect is in custody and charges are pending at this time. All information is preliminary, and more information will be provided as it becomes available. Media availability will be held this evening at San Francisco General Hospital.

But right after the statement was released from the San Francisco Police department, the actual Chief of San Francisco Police followed up with a message on his personal account.

“I am extremely shocked and saddened about the shooting of 49ers player Ricky Pearsall today in Union Square,” Chief Scott wrote.  “This kind of violence has no place in our city and will never be tolerated. My heart goes out to Mr. Pearsall and his family and I wish him a speedy recovery.”

A video from a witness submitted to KTVU shows Pearsall walking to an ambulance after getting shot in the chest. At least based on initial reports, it feels like the former Gators WR could bounce back from an incident that could have ended his life fairly quickly. He has been listed in serious but stable condition.
