Steve Spurrier shares thoughts on how Florida's QB battle will play out vs. Texas A&M
Steve Spurrier stopped by the Paul Finebaum Show in Gainesville on Friday to talk about Florida’s developing quarterback situation.
Lagway, a 5-star true freshman, was very impressive in Florida’s win over Samford last weekend. He started in place of Mertz, who missed Florida’s Week 2 contest due to a concussion.
Now that Mertz is healthy, head coach Billy Napier said he expects both he and Lagway will play for the Gators against Texas A&M on Saturday.
On Friday, Spurrier laid out how he expects Florida to manage this situation in Week 3.
“We were very good last week and DJ Lagway gives everybody new hope that good things are going to happen,” Spurrier said. “But listening to all of your experts before … I think they’re all sort of right that Graham Mertz will probably start the game. I’m guessing, I don’t know.
“And then Lagway will get in there, maybe for the end of the first quarter, whatever. And then after that, if you’re the coach, you’re saying, ‘hey, which one is playing the best?’ And you play him until he goes bad and then you put the next one in. That’s what I used to do anyway.”
The big topic of conversation all week has been Mertz or Lagway, @SteveSpurrierUF gives us his take on the matter. pic.twitter.com/y0sEH4MeCG

That’s high praise for Lagway from Spurrier, who coached more than his fair share of great QBs in his career. Expectations for Lagway have grown in the past week following his 456-yard performance in his first-career start last week.
Florida is a consensus 4-point favorite over Texas A&M on Saturday. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
It amazes me how much Bourbon SOS can consume prior to 5 PM…
If I had been first I may have consumed just as much…oh wait, I am first. I’ll be darned.
It amazes me how much speed a bulldog can attain before he is pulled over by a sheriffs deputy
105 mph…just 15 miles per hour slower than an AR15
Maybe just maybe Kirby can send a message by throwing Harris off the team to be made an example of? Speeding, no insurance, no tag etc….
Seriously Humpy what is the problem up there? I just don’t understand? How can this be stopped before more people lose their lives?
I am at a loss to defend it anymore marsh.Elite athletes bring entitled actions is my only conclusion. Don’t know if kicking off the team a first time offender as everyone at that age should get one mulligan. Harris certainly should be suspended and held out at least beyond the biggest game of the season in two weeks at Bama, even if it hurts our depth. His skill set was clearly missed in the Ky game but at some point repercussions for bad decisions has to outweigh winning at any cost.
Oh, and he wasn’t charged with not having insurance, he was charged with no proof of. I was charged with that once, couldn’t locate my State Farm policy card. It was dropped later when I provided proof the policy was active at the time…don’t know if that’s the case here.
Maybe you UGA fans can set up a GoFundMe page so that your players could afford their insurance premiums and registration for their vehicles. Maybe a safe driving course to try to avoid another nasty incident on the roads.
That’s the problem in today’s game, the kids can afford insurance, fancy cars, and fines for bad choices. As for safe driving courses, ironically that is already in place and mandatory at UGa. Some kids still aren’t getting the message…
And still hang 50 between the hedges. Imagine if he didn’t drink…
Some people get to have all the fun. Like drinking lots of bourbon before 5 pm and still being consulted by Finebaum on a topic he knows well.
Did I miss the 8 point movement in point spread since this morning? Did SOS agree to come back and coach the rest of the year?
No, you didn’t. That’s par for the course for an SDS writer.
