Steve Spurrier is no stranger to facing a No. 1-ranked Alabama team. But this week, the Florida legend won’t be calling plays.

However, that doesn’t necessarily tamp down his spirits this week as Nick Saban’s team meets Dan Mullen’s team in Gainesville in a 3:30 p.m. ET game on CBS.

“It’s going to be one of the biggest games we’ve had around here in a long time,” Spurrier told Tony Barnhart of SI’s Fan Nation. “It’s going to be a loud one, that’s for sure. I really think we’ve got a chance.”

Of course, there will be plenty of references this week of South Carolina’s 2010 upset of No. 1 Alabama as a 7.5-point underdog with ESPN’s “College GameDay” on hand. The Gamecocks had big performances from Stephen Garcia, Marcus Lattimore and Alshon Jeffery. The South Carolina also made life miserable for Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy.

“Stephen Garcia had the best game of his life, there is no question about that,” Spurrier said. “Alshon Jefferey had a couple of touchdowns. Marcus did some good things and our defense really got after McElroy. It was one of our best-ever offensive games.”

Similarly, Spurriers Gators upset No. 1 Florida State in 1997.

“That was a big night for the Gators,” Spurrier said. “Maybe it could happen again. You never know.”
