Just when you thought Florida State had hit rock bottom, the Seminoles lose another elite prospect to Maryland.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Four-star defensive back Nick Cross made it official on Tuesday, signing with the in-state Maryland program over playing for Florida State and Willie Taggart. Rated as the No. 55 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 1 recruit from Maryland by 247Sports Composite Rankings, Cross spurning the Seminoles to play for Mike Locksley and the Terrapins is huge for the first-year coach.

On the other end of the spectrum, this is terrible news for Taggart’s FSU program, which already lost out on four-star quarterback prospect Lance Legendre to Maryland on National Signing Day. For the second consecutive recruiting cycle, FSU did not sign a quarterback. The Seminoles are the only Power 5 program that failed to sign a single quarterback prospect dating back to the previous two recruiting cycles.

Cross would have been the second-highest rated prospect to sign with FSU in the 2019 recruiting cycle. He had been committed to play at FSU dating back to September before signing with Locksley’s program.

Maryland officially announced the addition of the DeMatha Catholic product on Tuesday.
