Dan Mullen held a pre-spring practice press conference this week which included multiple questions related to coaching in the NFL. Mullen was asked about the offseason rumor mill connecting him to the league as well as his former boss coming out of retirement to coach in the NFL.

Mullen said time will tell how Urban Meyer fares as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“We’re going to have to see,” Mullen told reporters. “Obviously, Urban is a great football coach. He surrounds himself with great people. Let’s see how that works. You can look at a lot of different coaches in a lot of different areas. Whether it’s NFL to NFL or college to the NFL, NFL back to college. … There’s a lot of different circumstances that go on within organizations on why that didn’t work. … I don’t know that everybody jumped up and down about Bill Belichick with the Browns, but Bill Belichick with the Patriots, pretty good.”

Mullen’s answer did not address that he and Meyer reportedly targeted two of the same assistants. Reports linked Charlie Strong and Chris Ash to the openings on the Florida defensive coaching staff. Both coaches were hired to Meyer’s Jaguars staff. Strong, who was on Meyer’s Florida staff alongside Mullen, is Jacksonville’s assistant head coach and inside linebackers coach. Ash, who was previously the defensive coordinator at Texas, will coach the Jaguars’ safeties.
