If Florida had any semblance of an offense, we may be talking about the Gators in the CFB Playoff right now.

But ever since Will Grier’s suspension, the Gators offense has been nonexistent at times.

Florida’s defense was its staple all season long. This was a unit that ranked No. 6 in the country, allowing just 25 touchdowns.

Sure, Alabama is great. But it wasn’t just the Crimson Tide that held the Gators to only 15 yards on the ground Saturday. Treon Harris looked like he has all season — tentative and inconsistent.

If Jim McElwain can find a way to pair an efficient offense with Florida’s bruising defense, the Gators will be in good shape.

But that hasn’t happened yet.

Looking ahead to 2016, Florida may have Grier back under center by mid-season. If you watched Florida in the beginning of the season it was a different team. Grier had more than 200 yards against Tennessee, Ole Miss and Missouri. Florida won all of those games and three more with him at the helm.

But Grier likely won’t be the only option. The Gators landed a commitment from the No.5 QB prospect in the country. Feleipe Franks is 6-5, 220 lbs and a pro style quarterback. He might contribute right away.

Jacob Eason, the nation’s No. 1 QB prospect, visited Florida last week. His commitment to Georgia doesn’t seem firm since the departure of Mark Richt.

It’s possible to win without a great quarterback. But Florida has to do better than it did this season.

No matter who takes over in the fall, the Gators offense should be in better shape.
