Wyatt Langford displayed eye-popping power at Florida, crushing 47 home runs over his sophomore and junior seasons with the Gators. Langford now has a Major League home run, but he did it without leaving the yard.

Langford’s first-career home run came Sunday afternoon in the Texas Rangers’ game against the Cincinnati Reds. Langford hit one high off the wall in a deep part of right-center in Globe Life Field. Reds outfielders were slow to field the ball because of how it off the wall, allowing Langford to touch all four bags safely.

From college to the show in a year

Langford was the No. 4 overall pick in last year’s MLB Draft. After impressing in minor league ball and spring training, he made the Rangers’ Opening Day roster for 2024.

As one might expect, Langford is adjusting to MLB pitching. Through his first 101 at-bats, Langford is posting a triple slash of .248 AVG/.325 OBP/.327 SLG. His numbers, though, are trending upward over the last 7 games, in which he has hit .273/.360/.455.

Langford presumably expected his first big-league home run to go over the fence. Those who aren’t diehard Rangers fans may be surprised to learn that Langford is the fourth player in franchise history to stay inside the park for his first homer.

Those who followed Langford at UF know the Trenton Thunder will be delivering a home run ball to the seats before long.
