Justin Fields has completed 72 percent of his passes this season, including completions in five games. But in two games, he hasn’t even attempted a pass, and in two others, he’s attempted less than three passes.

The play-calling for the backup QB at Georgia is puzzling to former Georgia QB D.J. Shockley, who recently offered an explanation on The Morning Show with John and Hugh on 92.9 The Game.

“Your guess is as good as mine, I have no clue, but I have been calling for it,” Shockley said. “He deserves that opportunity to show that he can do it. The only thing I could think of is things have not gone well at practice. Maybe he’s thrown a couple turnovers in practice, or he hasn’t taken care of the football, or hasn’t made the right read, where they’re not all the way 100 percent confident of him throwing the ball in a big game. But in the same token, this is a talented kid that will get it right. Given the opportunity, he will learn from whatever mistakes he’s made, whether it’s in practice or the game, and he will make you better.”

Fields is 18-for-25 passing for 200 yards and two touchdowns this season with no interceptions. He has 136 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

Shockley added that Fields adds a “new dimension” to the offense that will wear on defenses and defensive coordinators, and that he can not only throw it 40 or 50 yards, but also run for short-yardage third down plays. He cautioned that Florida’s defense has played well in terms of forcing turnovers.

Shockley sees coach Kirby Smart getting the offense back on track, and while Florida will be tough, he sees it as being a lot closer than people think. He sees the score in the 20s, and Georgia coming out with the victory.
