Former Georgia QB Jake Fromm will continue his NFL journey in Detroit after all.

It’s roster cut season as clubs figure out their 53 men for the active roster to open the 2024 season. The Detroit Lions waived Fromm on Tuesday but decided to keep him on the practice squad on Wednesday.

The Lions have been figuring out their quarterback depth chart behind returning starter Jared Goff. On Tuesday, former Tennessee standout Hendon Hooker won the backup job over Nate Sudfeld. The club appears to be fully moving on from Sudfeld by signing Fromm to the practice squad as a third QB.

Fromm has been playing professionally since 2020. Though Hooker was part of the 2023 draft class, he is 6 months older than Fromm.

The Buffalo Bills selected Fromm No. 167 overall in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The New York Giants signed Fromm off the Bills’ practice squad during the 2021 season. Fromm would play in 3 regular-season games for the Giants, completing 27-of-60 passes for 210 yards, 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions.

Fromm has not seen regular-season action since the 2021 season. He was a free agent in 2022, and brought on midseason by the Washington Commanders after a quarterback injury.

Fromm remained with the Commanders on the practice squad in 2023 and was released in May 2024. The Lions first brought Fromm in on Aug. 12.
