Georgia could be facing the departure of a key piece of Kirby Smart’s assistant coaching staff to Georgia State.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that running backs coach Dell McGee was a strong candidate for Georgia State’s head coaching job. Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, a former Bulldog assistant was also included as a potential candidate.

As of Friday, reports indicate McGee is now the sole focus of Georgia State’s search. Matt Zenitz with 247 Sports reports the job has been offered to McGee though a deal has not been finalized. ESPN’s Pete Thamel also reports other finalists for the job have been informed they will not be getting the job.

The current expectation is that a deal for McGee will come together in the upcoming days:

A 4-year letterwinner at Auburn, McGee joined Smart’s initial staff in Athens as the runnings backs coach. He added the role of assistant head coach in 2018 and has served as the run game coordinator since 2019.

His track record is impressive after developing Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, D’Andre Swift, Elijah Holyfield, James Cook and Zamir White during his tenure with the Bulldogs. McGee is also regarded as a strong recruiter throughout his tenure.
