A new entry to the NCAA transfer portal has Georgia Twitter buzzing on Wednesday night.

Tykee Smith, recently named the No. 5 returning defensive back in 2021 by PFF, announced Wednesday that he has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Players are able to withdraw from the portal, though Smith’s tweeted note indicates he will be leaving West Virginia and continuing his career elsewhere.

“I would like to thank West Virginia University for giving me the opportunity to play the sport that I love at a high level,” Smith tweeted. “I would also like to thank the staff, my teammates, fans, and most importantly the academic advisors for all the love and support that I received during my time there. Lastly, I would like to thank my family and friends for being by my side every step of the way. Despite that, I would like to announce that I will be entering the transfer portal. However, West Virginia will always have a special place in my heart.”

As soon as Smith made his portal announcement, Georgia Twitter started speculating he could be heading to Athens to reunite with Jahmile Addae. Kirby Smart hired the former West Virginia defensive backs coach to the UGA staff in January.

In his two seasons playing under Addae, Smith recorded 111 total tackles, including 10.5 for loss (8 TFL in 2020), 4 interceptions and 9 passes defended.
