Georgia closing in on decades-old SEC record ahead of game vs. Ole Miss
Georgia and Alabama have been joined at the hip over the past several years with constant comparisons being made between the 2 programs.
Alabama, under Nick Saban, was long the standard-bearer in college football. However, under Kirby Smart, a Saban disciple, Georgia currently appears to be carrying the torch thanks to back-to-back national championships and a realistic chance at a 3rd in a row.
On Saturday night, the Bulldogs will put their 26-game winning streak on the line as they welcome Ole Miss to Sanford Stadium. Putting the streak into context as it relates to Georgia’s SEC peers, it’s tied for 3rd in conference history, according to ESPN’s research department. The team ahead of Georgia: Alabama, who rattled off 28 straight under Bear Bryant between 1978 and 1980 and again under Gene Stallings between 1991 and 1993.
Should the Bulldogs defeat the Rebels on Saturday and Tennessee on Nov. 18, they can set the new mark of 29 against Georgia Tech on Nov. 25. Of course, that will fade in comparison to a more important streak they’re chasing: a 3rd straight national championship, matching Minnesota’s feat from 1934 to 1936.
No. 2 Georgia will face No. 9 Ole Miss today at 7 ET on ESPN. The Dawgs' 26-game win streak is tied for the 3rd longest in SEC history after a pair of Alabama streaks (Tide won 28 straight from 1991-93 and 28 straight from 1978-80). pic.twitter.com/0CFwGrCPmG
