Georgia to name indoor football facility after Billy Payne and his father
The Georgia Bulldogs started using their new indoor practice facility a year ago, but it didn’t have a name until now.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Dawgs would name the facility after a pair of former Georgia players.
According to OnlineAthens.com, the facility will bear the names of Billy Payne, who helped bring the Olympics to Atlanta, and his father, Porter Payne. Both Paynes played for the football team at Georgia:
The younger Payne played football at Georgia in Vince Dooley’s early years, but was around UGA football long before that. Porter Payne played on two UGA teams that won SEC championships and was an All-SEC offensive lineman. He was captain of the 1949 Georgia football team. He died in 1982.
Friends of the Paynes raised $10 million for the building of the facilities, so it makes sense the indoor field would bear their names.
The younger Payne is a member of the Georgia athletic association’s “Circle of Honor.”
