Richard Appleby will forever have a place in Georgia football history.

Fifty years ago, a group of 5 students, including Appleby, became the first Black players to play football for the University of Georgia. “The Five”, as they later became known, are set to be celebrated on Saturday before the Bulldogs take on South Carolina at Sanford Stadium. They will also be immortalized in the form of a monument that is set to be unveiled for the first time.

Over the past 50 years, countless other Black players have suited up for the university, all of which can be traced to the 5 men that will be celebrated on Saturday.

Appleby is the narrator of Georgia’s game trailer this week as the Bulldogs prepare to take on the Gamecocks, a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN. You can watch the video below:

The Bulldogs and Gamecocks are both 2-0. Georgia won last year’s matchup between the 2 teams, a 45-16 win at Williams-Brice Stadium.
