Georgia is coming off its first loss of the season, but the Bulldogs could still be making progress for one of the nation’s top recruits.

Knoxville native and five-star OL recruit Cade Mays announced last week that he was officially decommitting from Tennessee. It is a huge loss for the Vols recruiting class. Mays had been committed to the Volunteers for more than two years, and his father played for Tennessee under Philip Fulmer.

According to the composite rankings on 247 Sports, Mays is the No. 1 player from the state of Tennessee and the 15th overall recruit in the nation for 2018. He is also rated the No. 2 OT for 2018. He has the kind of talent that could make an impact in the trenches as soon as he arrives.

What is significant to the Bulldogs is that Mays made his decision to decommit following an unofficial visit to Athens. Mays’ Crystal Ball Predictions at 247 Sports are now trending towards Georgia, and it is entirely possible that Kirby Smart could steal the massive prospect away from the Bulldogs SEC East rival.

It is important to remember that Tennessee recently made the decision to part ways with head coach Butch Jones. The right head coach could certainly lure Mays right back to Knoxville and the Volunteers.

Still, it would be unwise to discredit the job that Kirby has done in recruiting this season. Mays would add to an already impressive 2018 class as the Bulldogs look to keep building something special.
