The Georgia Bulldogs are the No. 1 team in the country thanks in large part to an elite defense that has stifled almost every opponent they’ve played.

However, when you think of defense, you still think of Nick Saban and Alabama. Georgia coach Kirby Smart was a defensive coordinator under Saban and has modeled his Bulldogs defense after the Crimson Tide, but should the two teams be compared defensively?

On College GameDay on Saturday morning, analyst Kirk Herbstreit said Georgia has to prove itself on bigger stages before it earns comparisons to the Crimson Tide.

“There’s more tests to come,” he said. “To be able to be compared to Alabama, you have to be consistent. That’s what Kirby is trying to teach.”

Indeed, Nick Saban’s teams have won four titles in 10 years, so until Georgia gets a title or two of its own, it won’t be on the same level as Alabama.

However, Smart has the Dawgs looking like one of the best teams in the country, and it wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see Georgia reach the national championship game a couple of times over the next few years.
