Kirby Smart confirmed reports that wide receiver Arian Smith is dealing with an ankle injury. Smith has battled the injury bug throughout his career.

“The poor kid can’t catch a break, man,” Smart told reporters during his Saturday press conference. “He’s had an injury like right when he first got here jumping in a long jump pit. Then he had another injury his sophomore year. He’s worked so hard to get back. You know, he gave up track this year, and he’s an elite track runner — elite — and he gave that up so that he could have a successful season.

“He had a tough ankle sprain, a high-ankle sprain. I don’t know how long it’s going to take. It is going to require surgery, but it’s not broken. We’re hoping to get him back. He’s overcome so much and he’s such a great kid.”

It was reported Friday that Smith injured his ankle in Thursday’s practice. According to Seth Emerson of The Athletic, Smith is out for the rest of camp and possibly into the season.

Smith is entering his third season at UGA. He played 4 games each of his first 2 years with the Bulldogs. A noted vertical threat, Smith has 5 catches for 188 yards and 3 touchdowns in his Bulldog career.
