Kirby Smart comments on DC Mel Tucker leaving to take Colorado job
On Wednesday, the Colorado Buffaloes made it official, hiring Georgia DC Mel Tucker to replace Mike MacIntyre as their new head coach.
That means Tucker won’t be coaching for the Dawgs in the Sugar Bowl, but he’s still leaving Athens with well wishes.
On Wednesday evening, coach Kirby Smart was asked about Tucker and he had nothing but nice things to say about his now-former coordinator:
Kirby Smart on Mel Tucker: “When I came to Georgia in December of 2015, one of my top priorities was to bring Mel Tucker in as defensive coordinator. He is an exceptional coach, coordinator and trusted friend…

….He has a great combination of college experience, time in the NFL and has been a remarkable mentor to our players. Mel has been one of the major influences in the success we have had and we will certainly miss him.”

Tucker will have his hands full turning around the Colorado program. The Buffaloes started this season 5-0 before utterly collapsing and finishing the year at 5-7.
Tucker has some good experience from his Georgia time, though, so it’ll be interesting to see how he fares in the Pac-12.
