Georgia’s quarterback situation is one of the leading spring storylines in college football. After Stetson Bennett led the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships, UGA will turn to a new QB1 when it opens the 2023 campaign.

In Athens, it’s a 3-man QB competition. QB Carson Beck is the most experienced of the trio with 3 seasons under his belt, serving as Bennett’s backup last season with 7 appearances. The 2023 season will be Year 3 for Brock Vandagriff after 2 seasons of limited playing time. Vandagriff was the highest-rated recruit of the 3 QBs coming out of high school. Gunner Stockton is gearing up for his sophomore season after not playing in 2022.

Saturday, Georgia held its first scrimmage of the spring sessions. Kirby Smart offered some notes on how Beck, Vandagriff and Stockton looked:

“Carson has really good command of the offense. He understands it inside and out. He communicates it. He gets things correct. He had a couple poor decisions and choices today, but he also made some plays, made some really food throws. He has a really good presence in the pocket, moves around.

“Brock made some plays. He made some plays getting out of the pocket. Made some good throws. He had a couple of downfield throws that I think he wished he had back to give us a chance in some 50/50 situations. Keep the ball in bounds with that. He did a really good job in two-minute.

“Gunner made some plays. The made some play with his feet. He’s still… the administration of the offense, getting everybody lined up, getting going, getting the call in, which is not all on him. He’s grown. He’s getting better. He made some nice throws.”

Smart further revealed that Vandagriff and Beck got reps with the first-string offense. Stockton, meanwhile, worked with second- and third-string units. Smart says he’s confident in all 3 heading into the season.

“I’m going to keep repeating myself, but we have 3 pretty good quarterbacks and they’ve grown, each one of them,” Smart told reporters. “And they are all 3 different in their own ways.”
