Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a national championship season in 2021, and they get their starting quarterback, Stetson Bennett IV, back in 2022.

But, Smart knows that it is important to have depth behind your presumed QB1, and he has plenty of experience in that regard. Jake Fromm took over for an injured Jacob Eason a few years ago. Then, just last year, Bennett stepped in when JT Daniels was hurt.

During an appearance on “The Paul Finebaum Show” from Destin, Florida, on Wednesday, Smart discussed Georgia’s current QB depth, saying he’s happy with where Brock Vandagriff and Carson Beck are after spring practices (via 247Sports):

“Well, at the best programs, you’ve got good quarterback rooms, and we’ve got a really good quarterback room,” Smart said. “You know, we’ve got three guys and an incoming freshman that we think are talented. The three guys battled in the spring and got reps and grew. I was just so proud of Brock [Vandagriff] and Carson [Beck] at how much better they got. I can’t wait to see the 29 practices they get leading up to the first game to continue to grow.

“But within that, Stetson [Bennett] had a really good spring, too. Stetson went out and made some plays. He’s grown and gotten better. This is a guy that didn’t get these reps. You think of a national championship quarterback — ‘Oh, he got all the reps last spring.’ He didn’t. He wasn’t the guy. He was third-string last spring. So, some of these are his first time getting reps. And he’s also very comfortable in coach Monken’s offense, which is going to give us a chance to be more successful.”

Will Vandagriff or Beck be needed during the 2022 season? We’ll see how things play out for Georgia and Bennett starting on Sept. 3 against Oregon in Atlanta.
