The coaching carousel is now in full swing around college football, and it won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

Though almost all of the head coaching positions are filled, the new coaches will need to hire their own staffs, and that will lead to assistants landing bigger and better positions at new schools.

According to Georgia coach Kirby Smart, though, losing assistants to bigger roles on new staffs isn’t a bad thing. In fact, he said, Alabama coach Nick Saban taught him that it’s an honor to have assistants promoted to new jobs (via 247Sports):

“I think it’s an honor any time your assistants have a chance to advance themselves,” Smart said at the College Football Playoff coaches press conference on Thursday. “I learned that from none other than Nick (Saban). When you get an opportunity for someone to go on and increase their role, they get a promotion, it’s a great honor. I think it’s an honor to your staff, to your success as a program. I hope all our guys get that opportunity.”

Georgia reportedly lost LB coach Kevin Sherrer to Tennessee, where he’ll be Jeremy Pruitt’s new defensive coordinator.

That Tennessee job went to Pruitt, but Georgia DC Mel Tucker was in the running, too. It’s likely only a matter of time before Tucker leaves to coach his own team, so it’s a good thing Smart has a good attitude about assistants moving on.
