Kirby Smart explains what went wrong against Florida, updates quarterback situation
Not much went right for Georgia in a 44-28 loss to Florida on Saturday, especially after the Bulldogs built a two touchdown lead, and then got it back with a Pick Six.
There were plenty of questions from fans and media about Georgia’s offense, and specifically at quarterback where Stetson Bennett and D’Wan Mathis combined to be 9-for-29 for 112 yards passing for two touchdowns and three interceptions. Many wondered if other options like Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels or highly touted recruit Carson Beck could see the field, but Smart explained why.
In terms of the national conversation, Georgia will likely fall out of top 10 of the AP Top 25 college football poll for the first time this season.
Here’s some of what coach Kirby Smart told the media after the game:
KIRBY: What good does frustration do right now? It is what it is. Florida beat us. We have to get better, and that starts with me. We made our bed.

Kirby Smart says Stetson’s shoulder was separated on the hit he took in the first half.

Kirby Smart asked why Mathis when in as opposed to JT Daniels.
“D’wan is our second quarterback.”

Kirby Smart 💬 “I am not going to say the sky is falling and everything is coming down. We need to play better and get our players to play better.”

Kirby Smart 💬”I cannot wish myself into an explosive offense. We have to work ourselves into that.”

Kirby Smart asked again why JT Daniels has not yet seen the field:
“Right now we feel like Stetson and D’Wan give us a better shot because they have a better body of work.”

Kirby says he isn’t sure, but thinks Kendall Milton might have a slight MCL sprain.

Kirby Smart says he may have said it wrong, that Stetson Bennett may have had an AC sprain, not necessarily a separated shoulder.
But is not positive.
— 960 The Ref (@960theref) November 8, 2020
KIRBY: Bennett, I may have said that wrong. It may have been an AC sprain, and not a spirited shoulder. He got a shot. He felt like he could still throw the ball.
— DawgPost (@Dawg_Post) November 8, 2020
KIRBY: Right now we think Stetson and Mathis give us a better shot. They’ve had a lot more work. Obviously, right now we think those two give us the best shot.
— DawgPost (@Dawg_Post) November 8, 2020
KIRBY: We’ve always managed the half really well. I wanted to be aggressive there. I wanted to score. We were counting the best punter in America. Give them credit. They came down and scored.
— DawgPost (@Dawg_Post) November 8, 2020
KIRBY: What we have to be is who we are, and we have to get enough stops on defense to do that.
— DawgPost (@Dawg_Post) November 8, 2020
KIRBY: Florida was daring us to throw it. They had five big guys in there. But we have to find ways to get Zamir the ball.
— DawgPost (@Dawg_Post) November 8, 2020
KIRBY: No one is going to feel sorry for us.
