One of the more well-known defensive analysts in the SEC is Will Muschamp, the former South Carolina coach now at Georgia.

As the Bulldogs are early in their spring practice plan, coach Kirby Smart outlined for reporters on Thursday how Muschamp is helping him in particular. Smart and Muschamp were teammates at Georgia and colleagues on coaching staffs at Valdosta State and LSU.

Smart mentioned that Muschamp’s resume speaks for itself, but also that he’s done things like practice drills a variety of ways during stops at South Carolina and Florida as a head coach, and as defensive coordinator at Auburn, Texas and LSU.

“He’s probably the guy I lean on the most in terms of coaching the coaches and drill selection, and, ‘Hey, how did you do this,'” Smart said. ‘”Did y’all do this period first, that period first. Trying to find new ways to make our program better. I like a lot having him out there and having him in the meetings because it’s not the skillset of coaching. He’s certainly a confident coach and very competent. But it’s a lot more for me, I know he’s done things a lot of different ways, and when you’re out there and you’re in-between drills or a drill’s going on, you can walk over there and say, ‘How did y’all do this, is there a better way? What do you think about this? It’s helpful. It certainly breeds confidence and gives you more ways to do things.”
