Kirby Smart is one of the top recruiters college football has ever seen. Every team gets negatively recruited, and Smart knows exactly how to handle a tactic used against Georgia defensive targets.

Defensive linemen and linebackers love racking up sacks, one of the sport’s most cited stats. On Georgia’s loaded defense, Bulldog players don’t always record eye-popping sack numbers. In his Tuesday press conference, Smart was asked how his staff handles sack-related negative recruiting. The NFL Draft selections of Travon Walker, Devonte Wyatt, Quay Walker, Nolan Smith and Jordan Davis.

“Well, we usually fix that when we show them how many have been drafted. Then it’s silenced,” Smart told reporters. “We put Travon’s sacks up there and say he went 1-1 overall. We put Devonte’s up there and say he went first round. We put Quay’s up there, we put Nolan’s up there, we put Jordan Davis’ up there…”

Smart ended his press conference with his drop-the-mic moment (though he was using the podium mic).

“And then they don’t say anything.”

Smart’s staff doesn’t seem to have any issue with negative recruiting. The Bulldogs have assembled the 247Sports Composite’s No. 1 overall class for 2024.
