The Justin Fields hype continues to grow in Athens as the five-star enrollee is currently participating in his first spring camp with the Bulldogs. While he’s done enough to impress early in his Georgia career, Kirby Smart admits the program is asking a lot of the freshman signal caller.

During his most recent media availability, Smart noted that his freshman quarterback is starting to “hit the wall” while being shouldered with so much from the coaching staff and being forced to evolve his game to the collegiate level. While all five-star prospects dominate the competition at the high school level, making that initial adjustment to the college game is tough for nearly all prospects.

The good news is Fields is in Athens early and working those issues out before fall camp arrives, something Smart touched on over the weekend when asked about the freshman quarterback.

“He’s hitting a little bit of a wall,” Smart said of Fields. “I think with all the installation, he’s coming in meeting extra, doing all the things we expect of him, but it’s a lot. We don’t temper it for him. We allow him to come in extra and learn it.”

Georgia’s coach also touched on some of the things the Bulldogs are asking Fields to improve on in order to see the field next season. While the drills may be foreign to Fields, Smart likes what he has seen after challenging the young player.

“We’ve done some different drills that he hasn’t done before where he has to move in the pocket and move around and create space away from rush, step up from the rush. I think a lot of that is new for him. I think he’s growing into that role,” Smart continued. “(He’s) certainly got good mobility when he gets out of the pocket and he’s done a good job of picking things up.

“What I like most about him is he has really good demeanor. He doesn’t let the hot plays really affect him, he doesn’t let the low plays affect him. He continues to improve.”

No freshman quarterback is going to walk into an SEC program and dominate immediately, but given enough time, Georgia has proven it can coach up a young signal caller quickly enough to get him up to speed by the time fall rolls around. Now it’s up to Fields to take to the coaching he receives and work it into his game in order to make an impact for the Bulldogs in 2018.
