Kirby Smart provides update on Georgia's QB situation heading into 2018
Though most people expect returning starter Jake Fromm to again serve as Georgia’s top quarterback in 2018, 5-star freshman Justin Fields adds an interesting wrinkle to the Bulldogs’ quarterback room.
Many expect Fields to see the field in some capacity this fall, though what his contributions will look like is not yet known.
On Wednesday, coach Kirby Smart was asked about the Dawgs’ quarterback situation, and he said he hadn’t really thought about naming a starter:
Kirby Smart asked about naming a starting QB. “I really haven’t thought about it." Jake Fromm is getting most of the first-team reps. Said he will continue to compete with Justin Fields.

However, he did say that a freshman walk-on was earning respect and taking over the No. 3 quarterback spot:
Matthew Downing, the freshman walk-on from Alpharetta, has emerged as the No. 3 quarterback, per Smart. https://t.co/3NdPtehUgx

Again, expect Fromm to start. After all, he led the Dawgs to the National Championship Game as a true freshman last season.
But, much like Fromm took over when Jacob Eason got hurt last season, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Fields get more and more playing time as the season wears on, especially if Fromm struggles.
