What Kirby Smart said after Georgia's blowout loss against Ole Miss
Georgia coach Kirby Smart took to the podium for the postgame press conference on Saturday with a lot of questions to answer following the Bulldogs’ disappointing 45-14 loss at Ole Miss.
Here’s what the first-year head coach had to say:
Stating the obvious:

On a lack of preparation (via DawgNation.com):
“I’m in charge of the whole organization, team and coaching staff. We didn’t have them prepared today.”
On missing a golden opportunity to take a big step forward:

On RB Nick Chubb’s injury:
UGA RB Nick Chubb has ankle sprain. Smart said he will see how it responds in next few days.

Georgia’s next game is against SEC East rival Tennessee on Saturday, Oct. 1. The game will kick off at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time and can be seen on CBS.
Kirby definitely didn’t have his defense ready by any means. They did go up against the best QB in the conference, but they knew that going in. UGA fans can say what they want, but the team has not really liked good so far this season. So much for the Kirby love.
Why not love Kirby? Are you suggesting Richt could have done better? How did his team do last year against Bama? This Ole Miss team has talent like that Bama team. No way UGA was going to win.
It is what it is. I knew going into the matchup that our defense would have its hands full trying to cover the intermediate and deep passes. All we can do is prepare for UT.
GO DAWGS
yep if NC had connected on even one of the bombs with there WR running free behind Briscoe and Smith that would have been another loss
Georgia DBs can not cover anything and some of it has to be scheme it is about the same guys from last season and while not great last season they were able to get by
Get Brisco the f*** off the field. We have some depth at corner, wouldn’t mine seeing Hardman a bit more.
Bama’s defense must suck and not have been prepared last week either. Ole Miss gave them the Mississippi cousin treatment too. After hanging 43 on Bama, I think most people expected Ole Miss to score.
LSU has its own problems you should be worried about. The Tigers haven’t really looked good either so you don’t have any room to talk.
So far nobody has had their defense ready to play Ole Miss. UGA’s problem involves depth on offense, it’s just like watching the same team they had last year. Kirby’s recruiting makes this obvious, half of our current commits are offensive linemen and wide receivers.
Chickens came home to roost for both teams. Ole Miss was way better than their record and UGA was worse than their record. I was a little surprised Ole Miss let up at all after what they did against Bama and FSU.
Lots of freshman playing for UGA. What’s Auburn’s excuse?
You must not realize how many youngsters are playing for Ole Miss as well.
Uga has a freshman playing the most important position on the field.
Wow lost of comments but can you show anything I said was incorrect? Of course not.
1. Auburn won and UGA should be very concerned.
2. Teams play who they have – coaches choice and this fits exactly with what I said.
Auburns chickens will never come home to roost because they’ve already been cooked.
Conyers, Covington? Ooh, maybe Oxford???
Yeah and what has Auburn done??? Except loose to everyone. Oh wait they did whine at the refs tonight to reverse a TD so they could actually take home a win for once…lmao
There was no TD at the end of the game. The game was over when the clock hit zero. You should learn the rules. Maybe you will when you get to 3rd grade.
Wow – I am sooooo glad we did not have to play Nicholls State instead of Clemson.
Same old story….”Too much talent on this team to lose so badly”. Getting really tired of saying/thinking this. For God Sake….we can’t even kick a field goal!!!
I really expected CKS and staff to create a different attitude/culture on the field. Still early in the season but big challenges ahead…and we don’t look ready to face them.
Kirby is suppose to be a great defense coach yet this whole season 4 games in i would say it the worst defense i can recall at Georgia memory is a lil foggy Ray Goff had a few ugly def years but he always had an offense this team has lil to nothing
More than a talent thing or Richt might been greatest coach ever to win as many games as he did with a similar team
Idk what you’ve been watching, cus the d was good before today. Good, not great… 4 interceptions and a forced fumble against mizzou that didn’t result in points. Today, they were horrible
I think he’s a good coach. First Big Dawg job give him a little time he will figure it out. You know he had a good teacher.
While the defense hasn’t looked that great so far this season, I would just forget about the Ole Miss game. No one is gonna shut down our passing attack for the majority of a game. Except for Freeze and Kelly.
Besides, the players are under a whole new staff. It’d be a little different if it was just a new coordinator.
What’s gonna shut down ole miss is the NCAA. Hear that noise? It’s the sound of a train coming down the tracks and it bringing years of mediocrity in spades once the results are in.
Go back to UMass. An almost safe space.
And yet State would still put an inferior product on the field.
says the loser on the plains. A team hated so bad their own citizens burn their precious trees
at least we didn’t have to cheat to get what we got. A team that won 19 games over the last two years.
Y’all might win 19 over the next 4 years.
again, if that’s the case at least we didn’t cheat like the scum up north.
You got proof of pay for play? The NCAA could use your help if indeed you do.
I believe Kirby wants to win more than any of us but he has a ways to go to be a great hc. I also believe he will make some personel changes on his coaching staff. Saban had to do it before he won his 1st nc @lsu. Derrick Mason would be a great place to start if Vandy decides to go in a different direction after this season. One thing is for sure, the players are not the problem……it’s how you develop them.
Respect to the Ole Miss fans. 99% of you guys have been cool in the comments section. There was one fan talking reckless and he was put in place by another Ole Miss fan. I’m done with the old piss thing.
I saw this one coming. No leadership for the Dawgs. Offensive line is so bad. Poor Eason tried his best, but when no one blocks and everyone drops his passes, there’s only so much he can do. Dawgs look helpless and confused. Oh boy, it’s gonna be a tough one in Athens next weekend. Hopefully we will be able to regroup enough to atleast grab a couple of SEC wins before the season is over.
I enjoyed watching this game.
You know Ole Miss is known for being a very classy school, and for being 65% out of state, it makes your incest joke look foolish. Mississippi has some of the warmest and most kind people you will ever meet and your comments aren’t even about football. Grow up and respect the game. No need for that kind of trash talk.
As UT fan this looks all too familiar. UGA fires coach who lost 3 games, and now all the sudden the cubbard is bare and going to take 3 years to rebuild. Think much is coaching… Don’t know how they can get so bad so quick…but UGA still 3-1 with talent. Blaming Richt is cop out, just as when UT blamed Fulmet for sending us into the land of misfit toys for 10 years. All this being said, schizophrenic UT still worries me about this weekend.
Njvol I agree with you. I tried for YEARS to tell my idiot friends to be careful what you wish for. Right was a great coach. Seems like he is getting a lot of trash thrown at him now, but the guy is a winner. The biggest sigh heard on the day he was fired was from the rest of the SEC East. He lost some, sure, but he also broke some hearts, not to mention destroying Tech, spit, spit! (Had to clear the mouth)
I remember standing toe to toe with Bama during the Championship game…we’ll be lucky to win 6 games. So far, not a big fan of Kirbys system…. Our team was an embarrassment this week. I could be wrong, but so far I’m confident were in no better shape with this coach.
Smart has been at Georgia months and all this non sense about him is spewing out.
Guys just because we have the same players does not mean we will be just as good and yes that has to do with coaching but it’s not a bad thing. The players just might not fit his scheme, and that’s fine. He doesn’t even have a full recruiting class. You want him to learn how to be a head coach, change the culture the seniors have had for four years, inherit a line that couldn’t block pee wee and want to say “well. Uh coach richt” stop this.
Maybe none of you have ever stepped out for a team bigger than high school but trust me, if your set of skills don’t match the scheme you’ll look bad too.
