Kirby Smart shares where Georgia's secondary stands ahead of UT-Martin
Ahead of Georgia’s season opener against UT-Martin on Saturday, head coach Kirby Smart gave an update on his secondary heading into the season.
At the cornerback position, one of the main goals has been getting Kamari Lassiter fully healthy. Lassiter missed some of fall camp with a foot injury.
“Kamari’s really been going now for a little over a week and practicing and taking his reps,” Smart said in his press conference Monday. “We know he can hit and tackle, he’s a really physical tackler.”
As far as the other cornerbacks, Smart has seen a good battle between the potential starters, but is still waiting on making the call of who will get the start.
“The other guys have really competed there,” Smart said. “Had a good competition between Nylan (Green), AJ (Harris), Julian (Humphrey). They’ve all 4 taken reps and gotten work there. I don’t know if we’re ready to say somebody’s stood out there more than anybody else.”
In the safety position, Smart has been working towards building depth. He’s also been getting Javon Bullard comfortable as he transitions to strong safety this season.
“We’re trying to build depth,” Smart said. “We’re trying to get experience for Jevon. It’s a different transition when you go backwards then when you go forwards in a defense. He’s going backwards, but he’s going somewhere he’s played before. That transitions been great.”
