Louisiana attorney general Liz Murrill believes the Sugar Bowl should be postponed an additional day as law enforcement continues to investigate the tragic events that unfolded on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday morning.
At least 15 people were killed and many more were injured after a man drove a pickup truck down Bourbon Street at approximately 3:15 a.m. ET on New Year’s Day. The incident, which the FBI says it is prepared to investigate as a terrorist attack, resulted in the Sugar Bowl being moved from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon.
However, Murrill believes a further postponement may be what’s best considering the circumstances.
“You know, it’s not my decision but I would like to see it delayed at least another day,” Murrill said. “If they ask my opinion, I would tell them that. I think that was a wise decision to delay it at least a day. This is an active crime scene … I still think we probably need to wait an extra day.”
Murrill did add she believes there’s no active threat to the New Orleans community even as the investigation remains ongoing.
“I believe that the community is safe,” Murrill added. “There’s a huge law enforcement presence here in New Orleans. I believe that everyone is safe and the Governor plans to attend the football game.”
As of Wednesday evening, the Sugar Bowl is still scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry emphatically ensured safety of all fans at the venue during a press conference earlier in the day. Landry also confirmed he will be in attendance at the game.
Georgia and Notre Dame have each confirmed that all members of their traveling party are safe following the attack.
