New Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins takes swipe at Georgia's academics
New Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins is no stranger to his program’s rivalry with Georgia. On Friday, he fired shots at the Bulldogs, adding some much needed spice to the “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” rivalry.

Collins’s dislike for Georgia went even further Friday, as he also stated he would no longer write anything in red.

It’s unclear whether Collins will wear or write anything in black, but he’s proved his point. The rivalry is back on between Georgia and Georgia Tech.
Despite the Yellow Jackets beating Georgia just two years ago, this rivalry has grown a bit stale. Under Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs have become national contenders. During about the same time, Georgia Tech has posted a 24-24 record.
At the very least, Collins’ comments will add some spice to the matchup in 2019.
Collins comes from Temple, where he coached the last two years, but he served on the Georgia Tech coaching staff from 1999-2001 and in 2006. He probably dislikes Georgia from his days as Florida defensive coordinator from 2015-16 as well.
Collins graduated from Western Carolina. Let’s not start throwing stones about things like academic rigor when we live in glass houses…
I’ll start by saying one of my degrees is from uga…but he’s right a degree from Tech “travels” better and means more particularly outside of the state. Also Tech doesn’t have any “junk” majors to pack athletes into. What are people doing with all of those Communications and Sports Management degrees anyway? 1)Tech 2)Emory there a gap, 3) uga big ass gap 4)north/middle Georgia/ ect.
Can one major in consumer econ, sports mgt etc at UGA? Yep, it’s the State’s flagship U with approximately 50K students.
GT is mostly a STEM school with about 15K students, a lot of which are international.
But UGA graduates a lot more MD’s, JD’s, CPA’s , Veterinarian’s, Ag engineers, Banking/Financial industry exec;s, PhD’s etc than GT ever will.
“Also Tech doesn’t have any “junk” majors …” There is a reason why somebody can get a degree in “Industrial Mgt” at GT, and it ain’t because the employment market is demanding the skill set.
Also, find a GT scholarship and ask him about the “rocks for jocks” classes at GT.
You forgot 5) Tennessee Pacific Ocean wide gap
I don’t blame Collins for talking smack, he hasn’t had to play UGA yet. After Thanksgiving weekend 2019 he’ll planing why his bugs got blitzed by 40-50 points.
btw – there was a time period following the Jan Kemp fiasco when UGA had higher admissions standards for scholarship athletes than GT, the standards were self-imposed.
GT is a good school but no better in STEM than Auburn or Clemson.
See this is why I hate Georgia. Most of the fans but not all because there are some good ones and I have good friends that are uga fans and some of the best guys. But comments like this “ they will never beat uga” when we have before and idc how long sho it’s been the fact is we have. Also “ yeah he want be talking smack has played us” bull crap he will still be talking smack!! I know I will bring on them dogs. Y’all need to humble yourself is what you need to do. Maybe y’all wouldn’t have lost to Bama if you were a little more humble.
Congrats to the Fightin’ Incels of Georgia Tech! You’ve found your very own Butch Jones. Impressive!
As you suggesting that if the fanbase was more humble the score on the field would have played out differently?
I mean I don’t expect him to beat uga his first season or Clemson even. It’s gonna take time to build his team.
Honestly if it wasn’t for a lot of the fans I’d pull for Georgia. I don’t have a problem with the team itself because they are a great team and one of the best in the country but I can’t because I know how most of the fans are.
The new GT coach is bragging about the only thing he can, and likely ever will be able to. Tech ain’t beating Georgia. Not with Kirby Smart there…
I need to make a note of that
Playing to his base. Tech fans have to cling to the old dodge about academics because they have nothing to crow about in terms of actual athletic achievement. Collins knows he’s not beating Georgia anytime in the near future, so he’s setting the stage for the inevitable disappointment. But with his own degree from Western Carolina, and his recent coaching stint at Temple (both places where the main admission requirement is primarily the presence of a detectable pulse), he has little tangible basis for casting aspersions on Georgia’s academics.
Hahaha whatever you say Doc lol
Hey guys Tech fan here. This article is not true. He never threw shade at UGA academics. He actually praised UGA and said he grew up a fan of both schools. He has family that graduated at both schools. This writer is trying to put words in his mouth. When asked a question about recruiting players, he simply was implying he will use the Tech academics as a tool not a crutch and will make sure his recruits understand how meaningful a degree is from the school. Watch the video of his press conference if you don’t believe me and most of us have the up most respect for UGA and their academics. If my son got a scholarship to GA, I would be proud.
As a UGA fan, thanks for the clarification. I don’t blame him one bit for wanting to show some fire during his first press conference, but when I read the article it didn’t seem like that was his intention with the “meaningless degree” comment. From my limited vantage point he seems like an upgrade from CPJ.
Yeah man Tech got a steal I believe. His resume is pretty well rounded
Furthermore, he wrote his speech on a University of Temple notepad with a Temple pen which red ink on the last second plane flight from philly to Atlanta because it’s all he had at the time. So he made a joke that he wouldn’t use red ink again and everyone laughed. It was a joke. This writer is just trying to stir it up. Like I said, if anyone of you are offended (which I doubt you are) watch the press conference vid on YouTube and you’ll see the bs this guy is trying to generate.
This site makes me miss SEC country. There’s a lot of bs articles with no truth to them on here
Word!
I totally agree
I agree with you and there is a lot of it on dawgnation sites too.
Thanks for the clarification. Going off like that would not have made much sense. Figured he had to be smarter than that. I wish him luck. I never want to lose to Tech, but I do want it to be a meaningful victory.
Reggie Ball…..’nuff said
