Georgia adds graduate transfer QB Jamie Newman
Two days after Jake Fromm declared for the NFL Draft, the Georgia Bulldogs have reportedly added an experienced quarterback. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach reported, per sources, that UGA has added grad transfer QB Jamie Newman from Wake Forest.
Newman was 220-of-361 passing (60.9 completion percentage) for 2,868 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2019. A dual-threat quarterback, he also added another 574 rushing yards and six touchdowns for Wake Forest this past season. As a graduate transfer, he has immediate eligibility for the 2020 season.
There were strong indications that Newman was heading to Athens. Earlier this week, 247Sports recruiting experts posted “Crystal Ball” predictions that Newman would transfer to Georgia. Earlier Friday, word spread that Newman could be found in the UGA directory.
With Georgia’s other quarterbacks – Stetson Bennett IV (backup, former JUCO QB), D’Wan Mathis (freshman who redshirted in 2019) and Carson Beck (class of 2020 early enrollee) – lacking Power 5 experience, Newman appears to be the frontrunner to land the starting quarterback job for 2020.
Check out his highlights:
LMAO ! 60.9 % …………
And only 600 yards rushing to boot…can you say 4peat
Right Jobigator??? These pups don’t stand a chance against superior coaching. The only reason they’ve beaten us the past 3 years is because they were better than us. I bet those dummies think that more points wins games. Less with more right friend?
Mullen and Superior coaching in the game sentence ♂️
Wow…… comedy show
Trask barely passed for more yards than Newman and had nothing on the ground!
Enjoy looking at the taillights again!!
If I’m not mistaken, didn’t Trask play in fewer games? He certainly faced better defenses.
What Boggs said. Also, this version of cojones is a parody account
I agree that stronger players win games, but I do t have a clue about the rest of your comment.
You mean the superior coaching that left the only receiver that had done anything all day, wide open to take it to the house in a crucial part of the game?? There was no blown coverage… Or the superior play calling and clock management
Smart is 3-0 vs Mullen. You can use the “the scoreboard doesn’t show the real game” defense all you want, but that is a fact. Not sure how you call never beating someone superior coaching
Sorry, 4-0 vs Mullen
FLA has been GA’s easiest wins. Nothing will change in the future! Dawgs on top
The Dawgs will get 4 in a row. Gators go the Outback Bowl in 2020.
If you really think about it, you know that’s not what is going to happen and you can’t stand it. You’ll have an SEC loss by the end of the third weekend and that won’t be the only one you get next year. Lexington, Tuscaloosa and Jacksonville will all be losses. And don’t sleep on Muschamp like ya’ll did last year.
Lexington?
Lexington??? Really?? I’ll concede Bama is a tough ask but we get Auburn and Tennessee at home. The WLOCP is gonna decide the East again. I like our chances.
Hey Wadeless… since you can see the future…what will the scores be? I want to get my bets in..also who’s gonna win the Superbowl…I won’t have to waste my time watching the playoffs since you seem to already know the outcome..but I would almost bet you picked the Gators this past season too..
Don’t troll me bro, people are catching on to your game
Co who are you referring to…I hope not me… because I can assure you that you don’t matter enough for me to go through that much trouble…I’m a 43 year old man…I have no interest in playing kid games moron..
1.1 yards per carry. LMAO. Florida will have to do better than that next year if they want to beat UGA.
Welcome to the Bulldawg Nation young man, see you in September.
Exciting pick up. A seasoned senior to push our youngsters. Go Dawgs
The added experience, competition, and depth will hopefully help the overall QB situation in 2020 mitigate the dropoff from Fromm. I think this is a very good move. With enough potential strengths elsewhere, it’s possible too much won’t be needed from the QB for a productive offense.
He will have to be able to throw. Gerogia must have a better passing game than they did last year.
Based on the quality of the incoming receivers and TE, I think it’s obvious Kirby is committing to that. Tua/Burrow kind of attack? No, but I think we’ll see a lot more balance.
The increase in talent and experience among the WRs will be a big help to the passing game in 2020
He throws a pretty deep ball plenty of those in his highlight reel
Dumb puppies can’t keep their 5* QBs on campus. The transfer portal lives in Athens. You will see what a superior coach looks like next year unless we have any injuries. Less with more
Don’t worry little gators….. they are returning their D so good luck scoring again!!
Go Dawgs!
Ha. This dudes been busy. I actually love that it’s got the real CO all riled up lol.
You ramble a little to much though. CO usually just insults and bails. Good use of the catch phrases though.
UF is the only team in college football with injuries. Only team that has juniors leave for NFL. UGA just beat your dumbass after losing top 5 receivers from previous year and Cager with injured ribs.
I didn’t know Georgia had any superior coaches.
Top rated defenses don’t just happen by themselves
Apparently defensive coaches never count in these arguments
If only master DC Grantham had UGAs roster we’d have the best defense in the NFL
Hey DumbDawg my troll doesn’t have me riled up but he has been busy indeed, like most UGA fans posting crap all the time
Ok Nut Sack. Whatever you say
I’m looking forward to seeing what this Young Man can do… welcome to UGA and the sec…
Same here.
LMAO. Good luck with that, Georgia.
Yeah I mean crazy idea right??
This is Kirby clutching at straws. Desperation time. He obviously doesn’t have much confidence in Stetson.
Yeah getting one of the best grad transfer QBs available is totally “clutching at straws”
This kid has had spa good career but hes no Joe Burrow. A
Joe Burrow was no Joe Burrow before this season.
Clutching a straws? Really?
@redsox did anyone actually claim he was Joe Burrow? He doesn’t need to be Joe Burrow.
Yeah because qb’s like Joe Burrow come around every year…I don’t think anyone expects to Joe Burrow numbers out of Newman..
To have
Good luck without Burrow
And probably Brady
You’re an enema nozzle. Used….
Interesting pick up. Obviously helps to have a veteran in the QB room but don’t know if he’ll be the starter. He was good against poor competition but really pedestrian against the better teams. Don’t if Coley will adjust to his skill set or not.
His team talent is also going way up. And his defense could shorten the field. And he is a running threat. And his WR will be healthy.
And he’ll be playing against defenses that are elite..
But he’ll also be on a team with an elite defense. The defense is the true game changer. However, having a QB with plenty of major CFB starting experience can only be a benefit. After all, the offense truly can’t be any worse than it was the majority of last season.
What defense Ga. Lswho beat you by how many. You sure do have short memory. I guess a dog is just that way! lol
Can he read those elite defenses?
That’s great and all but that elite defense just gave up 37 to LSU.. also it helps when more than half of your games are against backups, first time starters or true freshman.
Focusing on the LSU game while ignoring the rest of the season as evidence to declare UGA didnt have a top defense is the definition of confirmation bias
How was that elite defense against Minnesota?
Boxster – read the rest of the statement. I didn’t just focus on one game.
Also.. about as good as that elite defense was against LSU, except the bowl game was meaningless unlike the sec championship game.
I read the rest of the statement and it still isn’t entirely correct. UGA had an elite defense despite a poor game against LSU. I guess Gus conditioned both Auburn fans and football players to view bowl games as meaningless.
Compared to the sec championship game it was meaningless. I never said ugas defense wasn’t elite.. I’m saying you didn’t play elite offenses till LSU and got stomped. Auburn, UK, UF, Tennessee, USC and Missouri all had either first time starters, true freshman or back ups playing. So 6 of the 8 sec games. Doesn’t take away from what uga did but it does put it into perspective.
Still not really sure how to feel about this. I’m interested to see how this all works out
If he played at WAke in the acc, sec better watch out he must be really special. Gosh I just dread next season playing against such a high caliber player. lmao
No worries, your team will not be playing UGA in any situation.
You should dread playing anyone that has a heartbeat…you sure talk a lot of trash…to be a msu fan…
Dawg man. You realize there are actually good players in other conferences right?? To judge him because he played in the ACC is just silly. Didn’t an ACC team just blast State in a bowl game? Look at the film. He’s pretty good. UGA is loaded so he doesn’t have to come in and carry the team. All that said I see this Leach hire has really boosted your confidence.
Dawg man, I understand that living in the basement of the SEC west probably impedes your ability to know what a good team looks like. I mean UGADAWG78 is right, didn’t a middling ACC team just embarrass MSU?
I think this was a good addition for UGA. Experience in the QB room is a good thing. He will play with far better talent than he had before. The QB competition at UGA will certainly be interesting.
I agree it’s no slam dunk but it could turn out really good for us…if Coley and Kirby use him the right way.
I’m thinking this guy is the veteran insurance policy. The starter job would be between Mathis and beck. Whoever loses that battle hits the portal next year. This guy may start if one of Mathis and beck don’t stand out but I bet he isn’t starting by mid season.
I just hope Mathis finally gets cleared. And while Bennett may be undersized, he’s not going away quietly. He can sling the ball
My guess is that Beck wont transfer if he loses the starting job to Newman because Newman only had one year of eligibility.
If u think this guy is an “insurance policy”, you are proving that you know NOTHING about college football, or maybe you just don’t ever watch games! Well, you are an idiot, so I guess your post just proves my point. This guy can run an offense and he can sling it! And of course, he is a bruising type runner when he takes off outside the pocket
Experience matters so this is a good pickup for the pups. But it reminds me of when we got Malik Zaire from Notre Dame. He just never really clicked. And the scrambling ability didn’t translate in McElwain’s pro style offense. Kirby isn’t likely to change the offense with Beck coming in. He’s more likely to double down on his run first philosophy.
Newman’s interception rate is pretty high in absolute terms and definitely for this year’s ACC.
I like his size, speed and arm strength but gotta agree with you, I have me reservations about his high interception rate along with the fact when playing against the better defensive power 5 teams he was only a 50 50 passer. I recognize he was battling a minor injury against ClemGoob but there were several unimpressive games. Well, At the very least he may provide senior leadership to a young talented but inexperienced QB corp. I’m excited to see how him and Pickens jell on those deep passes that Fromm seemed to underthrow this past season, and I hope he can become Frommesque on those back shoulder passes…
More interceptions might be a good thing for UGA. If you are going to play a more open style, you have to take a chance. Gotta break a few eggs.
“ More interceptions might be a good thing for UGA” that’s a bold strategy Cotton lol
No guts no glory.
He was often playing from behind being forced to win by out scoring teams on account of Wake’s defense. That would cause an increase in many QB’s interception rate.
This guy from what I’ve heard is actually pretty good. Good luck with him Dawgs.
Good move for UGA as it made their QB room better. No way he’ll be as good as Fromm was, though.
Per PFF:
“Behind Burrow, Jamie Newman is the second highest-graded QB throwing to a tight window — and third isn’t anywhere near him.”
“College football’s highest-graded QB’s through the first 11 weeks of 2019:
Joe Burrow
Justin Fields
Jamie Newman”
^this is what has me fired up. people are seeming to forget that our OC changed and with it, we moved from a true pro style (great for fromm) to an RPO, (would have been great for fields, not so much for fromm). If this guys legs and tight accuracy translates to coleys system, that’s a lot of drive sustaining plays we missed this year.
Georgia “moved to an RPO” offense this past year? Huh?
Coley is an RPO guy. His setups pushed our needle much closer in that direction, than a true Pro. The flea-flicker was closest thing we ran to a play action last year. Your response is very indicative of what I’m talking about. It’s a crap system for Fromm. He NEVER took the ‘r’ in the RPO, and it just looked like some vanilla-identity crap system. ‘R’ was never a threat, which would have been necessary to sustain many drives.
Interesting – Thanks.
Have you all even watched his film or read up on him? Outside of Fields and Lawrence he’s the highest rated QB coming back. Kid can scramble, read defense and has a cannon that drops dimes. He’s going to be a stud dressed in red and black with all the talent around him. I like it – no doubt he will start and bring something special.
Coach Richt saw him play in his new role with the ACC Network. He was very impressed.
Good get but I did watch the Pinstripe Bowl and a few other Wake games last year (go to root against FSU). He’s definitely an upgrade on Fromm in terms of mobility. His arm strength is pretty good too, but his accuracy is the issue. He is streaky. He’ll go on tears where you think he’s a very good QB but then he’ll hit rough patches where you think “we got to bench this guy”. Still it’s another option for UGA and they need them with Fields and Fromm no longer there.
I haven’t seen any film on this QB…but, to me…a grad-transfer QB has to be welcomed by the team & fit in in the new situation…learn a new offensive system and then win the job. The week-to-week defensive backs in the SEC are a lot more talented than those in the ACC…we all know that. This time next year, we’ll all know how he worked out in Athens & in the SEC.
Go Dawgs! He will have a much better offensive line protecting him than Wake Forest. Yes, the defenses will be much better playing in the SEC, but he will adjust accordingly along with practices and coaching with our defenses.
