Breaking the ‘G’ banner when Georgia players enter the field at Sanford Stadium is an important part of the pregame festivities.

But on Saturday on Senior Day against Texas A&M, long-time fan favorite Rodrigo Blankenship broke through the banner and he explained how it came about in a story after the game. RB Brian Herrien is typically one of the first to break through, and Blankenship approached him in the training room after a running backs meeting.

“Yo, Brian, I gotta ask you a question, man,” Blankenship said, according to 960 The Ref. “I know you’re the one to usually break the banner first, but could I do it for our last game? He said, ‘Absolutely, Rod, I’ll clear the way for you.’ That was amazing. So I was just thinking about it all day. I’m going to get to break that banner and it’s going to be amazing, and it was everything I dreamed of.”

Blankenship said Herrien gave him some tips about breaking the banner because, “I didn’t want to mess it up and look like a goofball.”

“He said, ‘You gotta hit it full speed, you gotta hit it as fast as you can,” Blankenship said, “because it’s a real big banner, and right when you get up to it, spread your wings like an eagle and fly, and you’ll pop right through it.”
