Few incoming freshmen in the SEC have been talked about as much as Georgia quarterback Justin Fields. He was widely considered the top recruit in the country during the 2018 recruiting cycle and many believe he could see significant playing time on the field for the Bulldogs in the upcoming season.

SEC Network analysts Jordan Rodgers and Greg McElroy displayed both sides of the argument Tuesday at SEC Media Days when discussing how often Fields will play in the fall.

His chances to take snaps this season improved back in February when Jacob Eason transferred to Washington back in February. While McElroy feels there is no competition in Athens, Rodgers appears to more confident in Fields’ ability to see the field early next season.

Kirby Smart offered up these comments on Fields from the podium during his appearance at SEC Media Days on Tuesday.

“He’s going to come in and compete very similar to the way Jake Fromm came in and competed with Eason,” Smart said. “He’s coming in to compete and learn our system. He’s made the players around him better. He’s embraced the challenge of learning the offense, and he’s a very bright young man.”

Fields certainly has a tough task ahead of him if he plans to unseat Georgia’s returning starter under center. Fromm not only completed 62 percent of his passes last season, he also threw for 24 touchdowns and 2,615 yards on his way to a Rose Bowl win.

It would be a bold decision if Smart decides to take the leap with Fields, but analysts are giving the option merit on national television shows that the possibility of at minimum splitting snaps with Fromm is there.
