Stetson Bennett IV throws 4 interceptions in preseason game, still leads game-winning drive

Stetson Bennett IV had a rough night at the office on Sunday, but ultimately came through in a big way.

The former Georgia standout threw 4 interceptions while playing in a preseason game for the Los Angeles Rams. However, Bennett was able to rebound in time to lead the Rams on a game-winning drive in the final seconds.

Here’s video of 3 of Bennett’s interceptions from earlier in the game:

Bennett also had another errant throw late in the 4th quarter that was picked off, but it was called back due to a defensive penalty.

Despite that adversity, Bennett found a way to snag the win. With just a few ticks left on the clock and facing a 4th and goal, he found tight end Miller Forristall with a beautiful side-arm toss:

That touchdown tied the game, and the Rams were able to take the lead on their ensuing extra point attempt. Bennett finished the game 24-of-38 for 224 yards, 4 interceptions and 1 game-winning touchdown pass.

With Matthew Stafford and Jimmy Garoppolo inactive, Bennett got all the quarterback reps for the Rams on Sunday night. A former 4th-round pick, Bennett is presumably fighting for a roster spot as the franchise’s 3rd-string quarterback for the upcoming campaign.

Bennett is a couple of years removed from leading Georgia to back-to-back national championships. Bennett did not attempt a pass during his rookie year, as the Rams went with more experienced options in Brett Rypien and Carson Wentz in relief of Stafford last season.

Bennett, 26, will have another opportunity in Week 2 of preseason action when the Rams take on the Chargers. That game is slated for Saturday, Aug. 17.

  • They went with other QB’s because he had to dry out. Let’s be more accurate. After that performance the LA coaching staff will be drinking.

  • it’s clear that mcveigh is pulling for him. that should tell a lot of you naysayers that there’s more going on than you know

  • Stetson Bennett is 26 years old. Matt Stafford is ten years older than Bennett. There is no way Stafford plays for 2-3 more years. At some point Bennett will get the starting job.

  • His NFL career may be off to a rocky start, but one thing he’s proven is you can never count him out. Is this the beginning of another underdog story for him?

    • Underdog story. Ain’t gonna happen in the NFL. The story happened in college because he was on teams loaded with talent and played against teams that typically had just a few NFL caliber players. In the NFL, yes, he’ll be surrounded by NFL caliber players on offense. But he’ll be facing 11 NFL caliber defensive players on each and every play.

  • Sorry about C Garret

  • We all saw it, Bennett had a fantastic college career. But with that being said, he was the most overrated QB in the game. He had tons of talented players circled around him that would make even the most pedestrian QB look like a star player. That will be exposed in the NFL.

  • “They’re playing defense coach, what do I do?”

  • Not concerned how he plays football. I hope he keeps his life straight. That is what matters.
