Playing in the SEC for four years, I got a chance to see a lot of different quarterbacks. Some guys had noodle arms, some had solid arms, and then others had cannons.
I will never forget Matt Stafford and the way the ball came off his hand. It’s arguable that he has the strongest arm amongst quarterbacks in the NFL, so you can imagine how crazy it was. The thing that amazed me was that he never seemed to follow through with the throw. He always seemed to be throwing off his back foot or in awkward positions. It was also a very pretty spiral.
In high school, I went to the Elite 11 camp in California with Ryan Mallet. I remember seeing him throw the ball a freaking mile it seemed like. He had the strongest arm I’ve ever seen in high school by far. He was just so long and lanky and he threw the ball like he had a whip. It was very impressive and it translated well into college.
Mallet slung it all around the field during his time at Arkansas and really had that offense rolling.
I like to think that I have a pretty strong arm, but these two guys had by far the strongest that I ever saw in person. They made my arm look like an average one. One thing about these two guys is that as strong as their arms were, they were also accurate with the ball. There’s no wonder why Stafford was drafted No. 1 overall.
