Trevor Etienne’s DUI charges have been dismissed.
Etienne faced DUI less safe and DUI under 21 charges after a March traffic stop. He was allegedly speeding over 80 mph in a 50 mph zone and passing over a double-yellow line. He declined a field sobriety test, was arrested and went to jail before being released on bond.
According to Chip Towers of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Etienne’s charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Etienne pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge and guilty to charges of underage possession of alcohol, failure to maintain lane and a window-tint violation.
“I’m pleased that the state recognized that the evidence in the case did not support a DUI, even for a person under 21, and agreed to dismiss the DUI charges,” Etienne’s attorney Kim Stephens told the AJC. “Entering a no-contest plea to reckless driving and admitting to a window-tint violation and failure to maintain lane is a just and fair resolution to Mr. Etienne’s case.”
Etienne received 12 months of probation as a result of the agreement. He was also fined and will have to complete a substance abuse evaluation, 40 hours of community service and an alcohol risk reduction program. The AJC notes Etienne may also be subjected to random drug and alcohol screenings.
Georgia has not announced or indicated any suspension for Etienne. The Bulldogs open their 2024 season against Clemson on Aug. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Etienne expected to be instant-impact transfer
Etienne is gearing up for his first season at Georgia. Many SEC fans, though, know him well.
Etienne decided to transfer to Georgia after playing his first two seasons at rival Florida. In 2023, Etienne was Florida’s leader in rushing touchdowns (8), yards per carry (5.7) and yards per game (68.4) while playing in 11 contests, making 1 start. Etienne had a career game in UF’s win over Tennessee, the highlight of Florida’s 5-7 season. Against the Vols, Etienne rushed 23 times for 172 yards and 1 touchdown and was named the Doak Walker Running Back of the Week.
Etienne picked up Freshman All-SEC honors in 2022 after logging 118 rushes for 719 yards and 6 touchdowns. He cracked triple digits as a freshman with an 8-carry, 100-yard game in the win over South Carolina and a season-high of 129 yards against Florida State.
There’s plenty of excitement to see how Etienne will benefit from being surrounded by a roster stacked with talent at all positions, including offensive line. With a big enough season, he could even become the third Heisman Trophy winner in Georgia history.
Current odds at DraftKings Sportsbook have Etienne at +9000 to win the Heisman Trophy. If Etienne wins the Heisman, a $100 wager would win $9000 for a $9100 payout.
For comparison, DraftKings’ preseason Heisman odds range from +800 to +50000. Etienne’s Georgia teammate, QB Carson Beck, has +800 odds, as does Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel. Iowa QB Cade McNamara is the biggest longshot on the board, with odds of +50000.
