We’ve all heard the old saying “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”

When UGA basketball Mark Fox was speaking to a crowd of Georgia fans in Columbus, Ga., he brought up Kirby Smart’s past at Alabama to get a cheer from the crowd.

“He’s used to beating Auburn,” Fox said, according to the Macon Telegraph.

It’s true that as an assistant with the Crimson Tide, Smart became accustomed to beating the Tigers, one of Alabama and Georgia’s mutual rivals. UA was 6-3 in the Iron Bowl during Smart’s time in Tuscaloosa.

Fox was likely motivated to zing Auburn because Columbus is less than an hour drive from the Plains, and the people in that audience probably have to deal with hearing “War Eagle” more often than they would like. But it’s not a rivalry Georgia should be particularly bitter about heading into 2016.

In Mark Richt’s 15-year tenure at UGA, the Bulldogs went 10-5 against the Tigers, winning eight of the last 10 games, including a 20-13 win on Nov. 14.
