It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Kentucky is a popular pick among college basketball pundits to win this year’s national championship.

The amount of faith experts have in another SEC team, however, might be a little shocking.

Both the Wildcats and Tennessee appeared among ESPN’s predictions of Final Four teams and national title winners released Tuesday. Ten of the 31 panelists chose No. 2 Kentucky to win the championship, with nine others slotting the Wildcats in at least the Final Four.

That’s equal to the number of national title nods received by No. 1 Kansas and No. 3 Gonzaga combined, making Kentucky a huge preseason favorite among ESPN’s experts.

But the No. 6 Volunteers also have several believers after earning a share of the regular-season conference title last season, which ended with an upset loss to surprise Final Four team Loyola-Chicago in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Eleven ESPN panelists selected Tennessee to reach the Final Four, with two choosing Rick Barnes’ squad as national champions. For comparison, perennial title contenders Duke and North Carolina also received two national championship votes apiece.

Virginia and Syracuse were the only other teams to appear in ESPN’s national championship predictions.
