John Calipari and the Kentucky program are in a prolonged spiral as the Wildcats have suffered sagging defense, and a recent skid where they lost 3 of 4 games. UK takes on Vanderbilt on Tuesday night in Nashville.

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish weighed in on the situation during a recent segment with The Next Round, and compared it to a broken marriage.

“It’s uncomfortable,” Parrish said, and added that while it appears that both sides would be better if they went their separate ways, it’s not practical. “I don’t think John could find another job where he is making this kind of money. So he’s going to keep this one, and I don’t know that Kentucky can afford — and I know they can — but it’s a lot of money to move on from John Calipari. So they’re just sort of stuck.”

Parrish noted that the fans have grown tired of the same excuses and explanations, as UK again has the most talented roster in the country: “It’s not close from a talent perspective,” he said. “And they’re just an OK team, they’re 5-5 in the first 2 quadrants with a loss at home to UNC-Wilmington. They’re good, but they’re not anything other than good.”

Parrish said he doesn’t think there will be an opening at UK, but wouldn’t rule it out, either.

“If they bomb out in the NCAA Tournament, it could just get so ugly where Kentucky would say, ‘Even if this costs us 10s of millions of dollars, we’ve got to do it,” he said.
