College football is underway, but the college basketball season isn’t too far off.

CBS Sports recently surveyed about 100 current coaches to get their thoughts as to who the top men’s college basketball player will be in the 2022-23 season. Kentucky fans will be excited to see that one of their own, Oscar Tshiebwe, not only made the cut, but was the No. 2 vote getter (33.7 percent) behind Gonzaga’s Drew Timme (43.9 percent).

After the season Tshiebwe had, it’s not hard to see why he made the cut. The native of the Congo and the National Player of the Year, in his 1st season in Lexington after transferring from West Virginia, averaged 17.4 points, 15.1 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Instead of declaring for the NBA Draft, he opted to return for another year in college.

The Wildcats finished 26-8 (14-4 SEC) and were 2nd in the SEC, falling in the conference semifinals. They then gained a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament but were upset by Cinderella Final Four team St. Peter’s in the 1st round.
