Frank Ramsey’s trophy case would be the envy of many athletes across all sports. The former Kentucky basketball star won the 1951 title with the Wildcats before embarking on an NBA career that saw him win seven titles with the Boston Celtics.

Sadly, on Sunday morning, the Kentucky athletic department announced the Basketball Hall of Famer had passed away at the age of 86 from natural causes in his hometown of Madisonville, Kentucky.

In a statement released by the school, AD Mitch Barnhart offered condolences to Ramsey’s family and friends:

“Frank Ramsey was a true champion and a true Wildcat,” UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said. “He was one of the best players our program and our state have ever seen and further cemented his legend as a professional. We offer our deepest condolences to Frank’s family and friends.”

Ramsey played for both Adolph Rupp and Red Auerbach — two of the most-iconic coaches in basketball history.

Ramsey’s No. 30 jersey hangs in the Rupp Arena rafters, and the Celtics have retired his No. 23 jersey. According to the release from Kentucky, funeral arrangements have not been made at this time.
