Former Kentucky RB Benny Snell is off to a solid start in his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he’ll be out for multiple weeks after he reportedly had knee surgery.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that, “Snell had the surgery to trim his meniscus, a source said, a minor procedure that should keep him out 2-3 weeks. The knee injury from Monday night hits Pittsburgh’s RB depth.”

Snell suffered the injury against the Miami Dolphins in a game where he had 13 yards on 5 carries. He was sidelined with an injury late in the game and was being evaluated Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin said.

A fourth-round rookie out of Kentucky, Snell has 118 yards on 28 carries. His best game was when he ran for 75 yards on 17 carries against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In a separate incident recently, Snell could face consequences from the NFL’s code of conduct following a drug charge filed in an Ohio court that was later withdrawn. Snell, an Ohio native, was pulled over about 70 miles west of Pittsburgh by police for speeding and they reportedly found 2.74 grams of marijuana in a plastic baggie with a Star Wars logo on it that was in a bag on the passenger seat of the car, Trib Live reported.

Using marijuana is against the NFL’s code of conduct, although both the league and players’ association have bandied about whether pot could be used by players to manage pain, Trib Live reported.
